Keeping Clothes Clean & Reducing Fuzz — Extend the Life of Your Favorite Garments
We've all experienced the excitement of wearing a new outfit for the first time. But there comes a point when your new shirt or sweater no longer looks new. Pilling and fading can cause premature aging in your clothing and put an untimely end to that new clothes euphoria. So why does this happen and what can be done to prevent it? Read on and learn how you can fight negative effects of fabric fuzz.
The same chemicals used to purify your water, like chlorine, can also fade your clothes. The colder the water temperature is the higher the chlorine content. Most rinse cycles in washers today only let you rinse in cold water. You can help protect your clothes from fading by using Ultra Downy®. Ultra Downy fabric softener reduces the effect of chlorine in your water during the rinse cycle.
Pilling refers to those little fuzz balls that collect on the surface of many woven and knit fabrics. It occurs when loose fiber ends escape from their yarn or thread twist. As clothes experience abrasion through normal wear and the agitation of the washing and drying cycles, these loose ends get bound together. Due to the strength of most fabric fibers, these pills are unable to break away from the garment and collect on the surface of your clothes.
Similarly, cotton fabrics can also suffer from pilling effects. Although with the tight weaves of most cotton items, wear most often results in a frayed or fuzzy appearance that can trap dirt and cause colors to look faded.
